Esphand Incense || Peganum harmala || Syrian Rue

A sacred seed with protective, purifying, and magickal qualities. Traditionally burned as incense across ancient cultures.

Esphand, or Peganum harmala, is an ancient and powerful plant whose seeds have been revered for thousands of years across Asia, North Africa, and Europe. Traced back to pre-Zoroastrian Persia, Ancient Egypt, and even early Greece, these seeds were burned as incense to dispel the evil eye, invite protection, and deepen spiritual connection.

Still widely used in folk medicine traditions throughout the Middle East and Maghreb, Esphand is often associated with energetic cleansing and magickal rites. Some sources suggest it may have even been linked to the ancient and mysterious Soma of Vedic texts.

The aromatic smoke of Esphand has a unique scent — earthy, bitter, and sharp — and is often used in ritual for banishment, blessing, and psychic shielding. The seeds also produce a vivid red dye known as Turkish Red.
